evoke vs invoke vs provoke

invoke- to call upon (for inspiration) from another source usually a higher power; to cite as an authority.

When using invoke think of prayer or even magic.  You can invoke the memory of someone or some instance to make a point.

evoke- to call forth a feeling, emotion or memory

* Many American candidates invoke the horrors of 9-11 in order to evoke the feeling of patriotism.

provoke- similar to evoke but in a more negative connotation usually used in reference to bringing up anger or starting a fight.

* Don't listen to that jerk he's just trying to provoke you. (into a fight)
